Robe à la Française

An eighteenth-century robe with a fitted bodice open at the front to reveal a stomacher and an overskirt parted in the front to reveal matching petticoat. The back of the robe typically had two double box pleats sewn in at the center of the neckline and falling to the hem. The skirts of most formal robes were supported by panniers that eventually reached widths of several feet.
